I co-lead a successful research workgroup examining the stomach bacteria H. pylori in Arizona. Thanks to a donation from the Art Chapa Foundation for Gastric Cancer Prevention foundation the working group was established to focus attention to increase the understanding of gastric cancer (also referred to as stomach cancer), peptic ulcer disease, and associated H. pylori infection in Arizona. The working group has been dedicated to accurately measuring the impact of H. pylori infection and its associated chronic disease outcomes. Current group projects include: H. pylori transmission, screening and treatment practices for H. pylori among doctors, general gastric cancer trends in Arizona, and hospital outcomes of peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer. The group put together a very successful symposium in October, 2014, inviting three nationally recognized speakers and drawing over 70 attendees.
